How do you open a lock yourself?

A lock may have to be opened without using the key, because the keys have been lost or stolen, for example. In this case, the cylinder will have to be pierced: borrow some material from a neighbor if you know how to do it, or call a locksmith who can do it correctly without breaking the lock.

Once the cylinder has been drilled, you will have to replace it and change the keys.

To prevent this problem from happening to you, remember to leave a copy of your keys with someone you trust, such as a family member, friend or neighbor.

It is also possible that your lock is closed and that even with a key, you cannot open it. Most of the time, a lock is due to accumulation of dirt or debris – you can clean the mechanism with a slightly damp cotton swab or WD-40 to unlock the lock.

However, it can also be because the knob is stuck – in this case, the problem is mechanical and will require the intervention of a locksmith.

How do you resolve a locked key?

It may be that you have the wrong key, for example because the key is new, because you are not used to it or because it is dark and you cannot see what you are doing. However, in some cases the wrong key can get stuck in the lock.

To solve this problem, simply use a lubricant like WD-40: spray it on the keyhole, turn the key a little and you will see that it disappears much more easily. However, if the key does not come out easily, don’t insist on damaging the lock, and instead call a locksmith who will be able to help without damaging anything.

The key broke in the lock, how can it be fixed?

If the key has been inserted too quickly into the lock, it may break and the door cannot be opened. In this type of situation, get a pair of pointed pliers, a fine saw blade (from your neighbor’s house or your house if you were inside), and try to pry the broken key fragment out of the lock. The lock must be in a vertical position: to keep it in this position, you can use a small flat-head screwdriver. Once you have removed the lock fragment, all you have to do is open it.

The key turns in a vacuum, how is it done?

If you notice your key turning on empty, it may be because the lock mechanism, which connects the cylinder to the bolt, is damaged. A key turning on empty can be caused by several problems: the lock cylinder is too old and has been damaged over time, there has been a theft in the lock, two of the parts no longer work in coordination …

To avoid damaging the lock, identify which part of the lock (cylinder, bolt) has the problem and change only that part. You can do it yourself, or have a locksmith close to your home do it. For example, to replace the cylinder, simply remove it with pliers or a drill, being careful not to damage the cylinder, and then install the new cylinder in place of the old one.

How to open a door that has been slammed?

If you have a system of slamming doors, you can use a medical X-ray (or any other semi-rigid plastic sheet) to open the door without the key! In fact, an X-ray can open any closed door, including armored doors.

To do this, you need to insert the X-ray between the door and the lock jamb, under the latch, and then press the latch with the X-ray. The bolt will then yield under pressure. You can (if you have the space) bend the radio 2, 3, or 4 to give you more power to tighten the bolt and make it give. Of course, it takes a lot of patience, but you can see that this method finally works. A locksmith emergency that is easily resolved by consulting ambassador locksmiths.
