family counselling

Family counselling can be a great alternative for families who are going through times of conflict and disharmony. In this context, the family can be seen both in its nuclear structure – father, mother and children – and in its extended structure, including therefore grandparents, cousins, sons, daughters, etc.

But after all, how does family counselling work? That is what we will explain in today’s post! Check!

What is family counselling?

Family counselling is carried out in groups in order to build and develop dialogue between family members and therefore, help in solving problems and achieving respectful, harmonious and healthy relationships.

What problems can be discussed in family counselling?

Generational conflict, drug use, alcoholism, disagreements about raising children, depression, bulimia, anorexia and many other problems can lead the family to seek the help of the therapist.

Anyway, these problems are seen only as reflections or consequences of family relationships without harmony, these relationships are the main focus of counselling.

What are the goals of family counselling?

Among the main goals of family counselling are:

  • Promote self-knowledge at the individual and family level;
  • Understand the importance of dialogue and respect for others;
  • Recognize the patterns that generate behaviors;
  • Improve communication and relationships between family members;
  • Understand the role of each individual in the proper functioning of family dynamics;
  • Increase personal responsibility;
  • Encourage constructive changes to harmonize the family environment.

What are the types of family counselling?

Like any therapeutic treatment, family counselling also has several schools and techniques that can direct the action of the therapist. The most common is the systemic school, followed by the trans-generational, structural and strategic schools.

The systemic school sees family relationships as a system of interactions in which the family is seen as something more than the sum of its parts and the problems with consequences of the failures of these interactions and not individual errors.

The trans-generational school looks in the past for repetitive and dysfunctional patterns that cause troubled relationships in the present. So there is a great emphasis on the structure of the whole family and on understanding how each relationship takes place in this context.

The structural school aims to modify the positions of each member of the family in order to promote reflections and changes in daily experience. Already the strategic school has a more practical approach and more limited to a specific problem in family dynamics in order to identify the patterns of interaction that causes the conflict.

What is the family counselling session like?

Sessions last an average of 50 to 60 minutes and are held monthly. However, this varies according to the evaluation of the therapist and the family. All members invited to the session are arranged in chairs arranged in the shape of a circle, in a comfortable and bright environment. The decoration of the room tends to be playful and contains toys to make children feel more comfortable.

At the end of the session, it is common for the family to receive tasks to be done at home until the next visit. At the beginning of the next session, each member is invited to summarize the progress of the counselling to date and the changes achieved.

Are there alternatives to family counselling?

If the family or a particular member is not interested in fully initiating the counselling process, we can look for more practical and simple solutions, which are often enough to solve the problem. One possibility is to seek advice, which can be done in person or online, through quality professionals in the most specific sessions, who answer questions and advise the family in their immediate need.
