What are the types of family counselling?
Like any therapeutic treatment, family counselling also has several schools and techniques that can direct the action of the therapist. The most common is the systemic school, followed by the trans-generational, structural and strategic schools.
The systemic school sees family relationships as a system of interactions in which the family is seen as something more than the sum of its parts and the problems with consequences of the failures of these interactions and not individual errors.
The trans-generational school looks in the past for repetitive and dysfunctional patterns that cause troubled relationships in the present. So there is a great emphasis on the structure of the whole family and on understanding how each relationship takes place in this context.
The structural school aims to modify the positions of each member of the family in order to promote reflections and changes in daily experience. Already the strategic school has a more practical approach and more limited to a specific problem in family dynamics in order to identify the patterns of interaction that causes the conflict.
What is the family counselling session like?
Sessions last an average of 50 to 60 minutes and are held monthly. However, this varies according to the evaluation of the therapist and the family. All members invited to the session are arranged in chairs arranged in the shape of a circle, in a comfortable and bright environment. The decoration of the room tends to be playful and contains toys to make children feel more comfortable.
At the end of the session, it is common for the family to receive tasks to be done at home until the next visit. At the beginning of the next session, each member is invited to summarize the progress of the counselling to date and the changes achieved.
Are there alternatives to family counselling?
