According to the ICF, business coaching is “ a reflective and creative accompaniment process with clients that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.

How to apply business coaching

The business coaching expert developed in 1996 the keys for a correct application of business coaching by companies in his book Coaching, Mentoring and Managing: Breakthrough Strategies to Solve Performance Problems and Build Winning Teams. In this sense, the author establishes that the business coaching process should be governed by the following guidelines :   

  1. Clarity. Communication between the coach and the coachee must be clear and precise, continually confirming that all the information that is exchanged is correctly understood. Otherwise, the professional will not be able to advance in his development if he does not understand the instructions of the coach, while the latter will not be able to help the coachee if he is not able to understand his expectations or fears.
  2. Feedback. Business coaching is based on a deep exchange of information between the participant and the professional, so constant feedback must be carried out between both.
  3. Empathy. A good coach must be highly empathetic to know what the circumstances of the student are. Each coachee will present a particular situation and it is essential that the expert knows how to recognize the fears, hopes, challenges, etc. of each individual, without prejudice or assumptions.
  4. Confidence. In order for both subjects to get to the bottom of the matter, the interaction between coach and coachee must be based on full trust, so that the worker can be honest and show their true concerns to the professional.
  5. Confidentiality. To create these bonds of respect, the information disclosed in business coaching sessions must be completely confidential, thus preventing that trust from being broken.
  6. Tenacity. Business coaching does not have a pre-established duration, as it will depend on the pace of each subject. Hence, the coach must adapt to the circumstances and capacities of the participant, allowing him to evolve based on them.
  7. Support for. The expert must reinforce the assistant’s self-esteem and solve their doubts throughout the process so that the employee can evolve in the achievement of their objectives and get the best of themselves.

Who can become a business coach?

Quite high requirements for a business coach can limit the circle of people capable of doing this field of activity. Considering the description of the specialty itself, we can say that one who has the following personal characteristics can become a real pro:

  • is not afraid to conduct training. Especially if you already have experience in conducting;
  • be able to compose training programs for various purposes;
  • has high communication skills;
  • higher education is mandatory in this area;
  • confident knowledge of PC;
  • competent and correct oral and written speech. It will not hurt to have experience in public speaking.
  • In addition, it is desirable to have:
  • personal experience of active sales;
  • be well versed in the technologies of successful sales;
  • have positive feedback from the participants of the conducted trainings;
